Water Filters

Today was a pretty relaxed day in Occoruro. For the first two hours, we gave a presentation on the water filters with great help from ProWorld staff. We explained and worked interactively with the community to help them understand the uses and benefits of the filters. Many of the families do not have access to clean drinking water, although most of them do boil the water right now to kill any pathogens. However, implementation of the water filters will help them to save wood, while also making clean water available at all times. The community seemed excited about the filters, and I saw a couple of families put them to use right away.

After work, I had lunch and then went to the travel agency to book my trip to Macchu Picchu. I felt a bit bad having to postpone the trip to this weekend, but it had to be done. Now, instead of taking the normal tourist route with the train, I am doing a three day excursion that including biking, hiking, and tours of various archeological sites on the way to Macchu Picchu. Something interesting I found out today was that the actual pronunciation of Macchu Picchu is mah-chu peek-chu. I realized that many people say it incorrectly simply because they have never heard the correct pronunciation, just the tourist one. Nonetheless, the trip should be a lot of fun, and I’m really looking forward to it. I even got a friend to go with me, one of the volunteers in Urubamba.

In the evening, we went out to a club to celebrate the end of the work week and the upcoming Cuzco festivals. It was a ton of fun, but I’m looking forward to relaxing with the festivals before my trip to Macchu Picchu begins Saturday morning.
