Sr. de Torrechayoc -- Pt. 2

Today was the main day of the festival. We woke up relatively early and went out to watch the dances and festivities. Although some of the dances were the same as yesterday, overall, there was even more variety and the dances were more exciting as a whole. Something I was really excited about was that two of the members of our group, Neil and Detti, were a part of a dance troupe. Their host family takes part in this festival every year, and as a result, Neil and Detti were asked to participate. We were all excited to see them, and their dance troupe was definitely one of my favorites. Although I really wanted to stay longer at the festival, we knew that it was important to get back to Cuzco before the crowd.

I was disappointed that I didn’t accomplish two of the things I set out to do at the festival. My first goal was to eat cuy, or guinea pig. This is a really popular dish at all of the festivals, and it is cheaper as well. However, I couldn’t find a clean looking restaurant that served cuy, so I had to pass in fear of getting stomach problems. My second goal was to have anticuchos, specifically the ones consisting of beef hearts. Again, I could only find these at street vendors, which surely aren’t the cleanest places to get food. I guess I’ll try again for these dishes in the near future and/or at the next festival.

When we got back to Cuzco, I was really excited to see the host family again. I felt as though I hadn’t seen them in forever, even though it had been less than two days. I definitely missed Margarita’s cooking while in Urubamba, so it felt great to come back to the house. At night, I watched Game 6 of the NBA Finals with the family. Although I really wanted there to be a Game 7, I give props to Dallas for a well-played game. I really didn’t feel connected to either of the teams in the finals, so wanting a Game 7 was more of a desire to have an exciting series. Nonetheless, the game was great and it was even better to spend it with family.

Tomorrow we have our fourth lesson in the school, which is focusing on organic and inorganic trash. I feel that our lesson plan is pretty good, but we will have to wait until tomorrow to find out for sure. I definitely feel that we are getting more comfortable with the children, so hopefully the lessons will become more and more effective.
